Over the years many people have asked me why adoption is so expensive. Though I have to agree that there are some agencies that seem to be more "out to make a buck" than doing any kind of community service to help children, I do understand some of the costs involved. Here are five fee expenses to understand. One word of warning, explore these suggestions before signing any contract. Once locked into a contract, these suggestions can help but can't save you from working with a greedy agency.
First, all agencies have separate fees for everything within the adoption situation itself but not all agencies tell you what those are. For example, when one agency says that an adoption will cost $25,000 and another says its $20,000 plus $5,000 for addition counseling and paperwork, the fees could actually Read more [...]

With Summer now well and truly here and the abundance of festivals and family days out, we turn our attention to Child Safety. With generally such big venues it can take only seconds to lose your child, they can wander to have a look at something without you noticing even when you are the most attentive of parents.
Losing your child at a country show or festival is absolutely terrifying for both the parents and the child, therefore being reunited as quickly as possible is really important. Every moment they are away from you seems like a lifetime and is of course a very traumatic experience for you both. At this point you seem to forget that there are many good people in the world and only focus on the bad. But rest assured any family friendly event will have staff and stewards who have all Read more [...]

You have waited so long for this wonderful opportunity. Not only do you see it as your chance to be the best parent that you believe that you can be, but you also hope that you will be able to bring joy, support, and an abundance of love to a child. Your dream is that you and your child have a life full of great experiences. In your quest to adopt, you knew in your heart that you just wanted a child to share life with, and race was a moot point. Regardless of whether your child would be black or white or tan, your love would supersede all. That is an excellent ideal. However, the reality of adopting a child of another cultural background is not as cut and dry, or simple as that. It takes a great deal of awareness, sensitivity, and education, for your family and your child.
Whether your child Read more [...]

In basic terms, adoption is when a child's custody is given to a person or two people that aren't the biological parents of that child.
Adoption permanently negates the biological parent or parents from any responsibility of that child for the rest of its life. The person or people that adopted the child gain full custodial rights and there isn't really a difference between biological and adoptive parents in the eyes of the law.
There are many different types of adoption that include open adoption, semi-open adoption, and closed adoption. An open adoption is when custody is given to non-biological parents but the biological parents are entitled to visits, letters, or other forms of contact.
The arrangements vary and can be very lenient or restrictive depending on the situation. A semi-open Read more [...]

Martial status is not necessarily a barrier to adopting, although many agencies, attorneys, and/or international countries still consider a married couple as the ideal adopters. There are many wonderful people that want to become parents, and there are many children that would thrive in a home with a single parent, especially when compared to their current situation or alternative placement.
Many reasons exist for unmarried men and women to choose adoption. These include:
-They have never married and have no intention of getting married. I once asked a single female applicant if she planned to ever marry. She said, "well, the perfect man hasn't knocked on my door yet and I'm not out looking out for him, either".
-They might like to get married at some point, but are not currently Read more [...]

Robin D. Hayes, Ph.D. asked:
How to have a successful older child adoption? Planning is the key. We all want to believe in fairy tales; it's human nature. Problems after placement? Not our child! Our child will sail through, adjust at record speed, and become the benchmark by which all others will be measured.
That's unlikely.
If you are reading this, you are becoming aware, investigating, and preparing in advance, all of which bodes well both for you and your child. There will still be issues. Plan for them. Plan for success and it will be yours. Here's what to do:
Adoption Agency: if adopting through an adoption agency, consider only agencies where most of the staff have adopted older child. Most means 66.6% or two-thirds. Why? They possess expertise you may need later, and Read more [...]

Loren Bailey asked: Adoption is a positively uplifting experience. Because the adoption process is governed by various complex laws that can be quite confusing it is suggested that an adoption attorney be contracted. What makes the laws and process even more confusing is that adoption legalities can be and frequently are different at the state level. The variance in laws becomes even greater for international adoptions. With the amount of legal details involved in the entire adoption process, it can be very helpful to obtain legal representation. Noting the complexity of these issues, the process can be eased by locating a reputable adoption attorney.Although it is the belief of many that an adoption attorney is necessary for all adoption processes, it is the author's opinion that an Read more [...]
